Artist statement
Rather than emulating the style of traditional sumi-e (black ink painting), I respond thoughtfully with my own technique that aims to capture a variety of images in the form of magical realism. The tonality of sumi allows me to create rich, velvety blacks and subtle grays. When sumi is accompanied by the vibrancy of acrylic ink, I’m able to create dramatic contrasts within my paintings. These contrasts represent varying aspects of emotion and how emotions are much more complex than we sometimes realize.
Many of my paintings reflect elements or symbols of my journey throughout life and how that journey is shaped by the inspirations I find within nature. My artistic goal is to always allow viewers a moment of contemplation, even if it is to just pause and appreciate the splendor of nature and the world around us.
BIO
Kristina resides in beautiful Minnesota with her paintbrushes and cats, Mr. Oogie Boogie Man and Mr. Bojangles. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Art Therapy from the University of Wisconsin - Superior and works full-time as a Direct Support Professional. She's currently working on a variety of written projects, ranging from poetry and short stories to a fiction novel.
